"In My Head" is a song performed by American R&B singer Jason Derülo as the second single released from his self-titled debut album, Jason Derülo. It was first released via digital download on December 9, 2009.

"In My Head" debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #63 on the week ending December 26, 2009. It has since become Jason's second song to reach the top 10, at #8. The song peaked at #2 on the Canadian Hot 100 on the issue dated March 13, 2010, becoming his second top 3 single in Canada. The music video was filmed in late December of 2009 and released on January 23, 2010 via YouTube. The video begins in the parking lot of a convenience store, with Derülo leaning on a car with some friends when he eventually spots the female lead leaving the store. Derülo is staring at her (with his debut single "Whatcha Say" playing in the background), and eventually he goes up and talks to her and starts singing to her. The video is an extensive dancing video with Derülo dancing near the car with the female lead, in the occasional breakaways, and far more extensively with two male dancers during the bridge of the song. The music video occasionally breaks away to Derülo's silhouette dancing in the fog. Eventually the girl he is dreaming about has joined him. In the end it is revealed that the entire music video was all in Derülo's head and the beginning scene is shown again with the female lead exiting the store as she did at the beginning of the video. As with the beginning, "Whatcha Say" is also played in the end. You can watch it below.

"Body Language" is Jesse McCartney's fourth single from his album Departure and his second single from Departure: Recharged. It was released as a remix featuring T-Pain. The remix is almost similar to the track of the album except for certain parts of the song which is sung by T-Pain. It has been officially announced by Jesse McCartney during his tour that this would be his next single during this summer as a follow up to the successful hit "Leavin'" which was released last summer apart from "It's Over" and "How Do You Sleep?".

The single hit radio airwaves in September 8. "Body Language" consist of a line of lyric adopted from "Leavin’", Jesse McCartney's most successful single to date as a mark of similarities between the two tracks. The catchy line "The thing you got behind you is amazing" were exactly the same in both the singles. "Body Language" was also a blend of few different languages in the form of short phrases and words such as parlez vous francais?, konnichiwa and chica. All three of the phrase and word is repeated during the chorus and is French, Japanese and Spanish respectively. This was a first of its kind for Jesse McCartney alongside his other tracks on Departure: Recharged.

"Body Language" has sold approximately 850,000 digital copies as of Dec. 27, 2009. It also debuted on the Billboard Hot 100 at #84. It fell off the next week, but re-entered at #71 and has reached a peak of #35. On the week ending January 9, 2010, after it had peaked at #35, "Body Language" made a 35-position jump on the Hot 100 from #80 to #45.

The scene changes and Cassie walks into a shop where Chris is standing but he walks out singing which gets Cassie's attention. "Baby" is a song by Canadian recording artist Justin Bieber. It was released as the lead single from the latter half of Bieber's debut album, My World 2.0. The track was written by Bieber with Christopher "Tricky" Stewart and Terius "The-Dream" Nash" who worked with Bieber on "One Time" and also by R&B singer Christina Milian and rapper Ludacris. The song was available for digital download on January 18, 2010. The song received airplay directly after release, the song officially impacted mainstream and rhythmic radio on January 26, 2010.

The "Baby" composition is predominatly upbeat, featuring Bieber’s R&B vocals over a dance beat, full of keyboard and synths. Lyrically, Bieber’s lines explain his distress over his lost love, and promise to get it back, featured in lines like, “And I wanna play it cool/ But I'm losin' you…/I'm in pieces/ So come and fix me…” The chorus features the distinct and repetitive “Baby, Baby, Baby, Ohhhh (Nooooo)” hook. However, the acoustic rendition by Bieber himself did originally have a middle eight. The outro is reminiscent of the hook, with a repetitive “Yeah”, however with Bieber providing additional vocals with it.

Bieber premiered an acoustic verison of "Baby" on December 28, 2009 on MuchMusic, and it remains to be his only major performance of the song performed acoustically. During most live performances of the song, Bieber jerks during the end of the chorus. He sung the song on VH1's Pepsi Super Bowl Fan Jam, along with other performers Rihanna and Timbaland, and on CBS' The Early Show as a part of their Super Bowl programming. He performed the song the first time with Ludacris BET's SOS: Saving Ourselves - Help for Haiti Telethon, on February 6, 2009, which also aired on VH1, and MTV. During the chorus, he changed the lyrics to "Baby, baby, Haiti", to show support for the cause, and the reason everyone came together for the show.

On the issue dated February 8, 2010, the song debuted in Australia on the official ARIA Singles Chart at number thirty-seven.

Filming for the music video began during the week of January 25, 2010, in Los Angeles during the week of the 52nd Grammy Awards, at which Bieber presented with Kesha. Bieber's friend, Canadian rapper Drake was also on set for the shoot, however did not make a cameo in the video. However Bieber did not rule out an appearance for him on the upcoming album. He added, "however the recorded version is quite another animal then what we performed live- it's better, we hope you like it- this might be the most fun energetic song we've ever tackled." "Wheels" is a single from the Foo Fighters' compilation album, Greatest Hits. The single premiered on radio on September 23, 2009, while the album was released on November 3, 2009. The single was officially released on September 29, 2009. The song had its live premiere at the White House as part of an Independence Day celebration honoring military service members. The songs "Wheels" and "Word Forward" were recorded specifically for the compilation album with producer Butch Vig, marking Dave Grohl's first collaboration with the producer since Nirvana's album Nevermind.

The song debuted at #73 on the Billboard Hot 100, being their highest chart single since their 2007 hit "The Pretender". It surpassed the old peak, at #72. On November 14, 2009, the song hit #1 on the Rock Songs chart, their first on the then-new chart. It has also so far peaked at #3 on the Alternative Songs chart and #7 on the Hot Mainstream Rock Tracks chart.

The song has received mixed reviews, so far. Benjamin Sheehan from Billboard Magazine says: "The song has a Weezer-meets-The Fray vibe, and it flies out of the gate with feedback-laden riffs, well-timed stutter stops and a gentle balance of electric and acoustic guitars. Four-chord loops nicely underscore Grohl's frustration as he mourns life's failure to meet his expectations. Grohl sings during the opening verse, "I wanted something better, man/I wished for something new". For an act of this stature and talent, it's hard not to agree just a little".

A music video was released in October 2009, and a new video for the song directed by Sam Brown is stated to appear on a DVD that will be included on some versions of the compilation CD.

The music video that directed by Ben Mor opens on a road in the middle of a desert panning up to the cosmic sky which shifts to scenes of each of the members singing in different locations of space: Fergie lies in the middle of a lush, green jungle, apl.de.ap levitates on a desert planet in nomadic clothing, will.i.am rides an elephant on a moon of Jupiter, and Taboo glides around the Sun in a spacesuit. Apl takes out a map and will.i.am uses a compass to search for a path to the other members. After a while, will.i.am finds a dial which reveals gateways for each of the members to go through. All the members use the gateway, turn into shooting stars, and land on the planet (presumably Earth), with the road in the middle of the desert. "Run This Town" is a song performed by American rapper Jay-Z features Barbadian R&B singer Rihanna and rap artist Kanye West, who also produced the song alongside No I.D.

In charts "Run This Town" climbed to number 3 during its third week on the Billboard Hot 100 after debuting at number 88 and climbing to number 66 in week two. The song has so far peaked number 2. It is Jay-Z's highest charting song of his career as a lead artist. The song has so far sold 1,437,573 copies in the U.S. It also debuted at #16 on the Irish Singles Chart, based on downloads alone, and then peaked at #4 the following week.

The song was digitally released on August 30 in UK. During its second day of release it reached #1 on the UK iTunes Chart after knocking off another new release "Get Sexy" by the Sugababes. On September 6, "Run This Town" entered the UK Singles Chart at number-one, giving Jay-Z his first UK number-one as a lead artist, his fourth overall. The song sold 62,000 copies in its first week.

It involves people in masks, holding torches whilst walking. Rihanna takes a bandana from covering her mouth and starts to sing in a park while explosions are going off around her. Then Jay-Z sings his verse whilst in a temple-like area. At one point the trio are on a stage-like platform with the mob surrounding them. Kanye West sings in a cave-like area holding a torch and having a bandana cover his face like Jay-Z and Rihanna.

"Down" is a song by British Indian R&B artist Jay Sean. In North America the song was released as his debut-single from his debut-album All or Nothing. In other markets, including his native UK, the song will serve as Jay Sean's lead single from what will be his third studio album there. The single features American rapper and label mate Lil Wayne and is produced by J-Remy and Bobby Bass.

The track was released to official U.S. radio airplay on May 31, 2009 and on iTunes on June 30, 2009. "Down" hit #1 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart on the issue dated October 7, 2009, knocking The Black Eyed Peas off the top of the chart after their 26 week reign at #1. Plus, it's the first time since Lady Gaga that another artist went to number one. The video was first shot in London on 24th April 2009 with Cash Money crew without Lil Wayne, the video was shot over two days. Birdman, Chipmunk, Ghetts and Tinie Tempah make an appearance in the video. The video also features a lead girl, mansion, dancers and bottles. Music Video of "Knock You Down" by Keri Hilson

The music video for "Knock You Down" was shot in Los Angeles, California with director Chris Robinson (director).

In the video's first scene Hilson is filmed free-falling in the bedroom of her apartment. The next scene follows her life with Kanye West playing her love interest, after which Ne-Yo takes over playing another love interest during his verses. The final part of the video features a split screen which on the left shows what is happening in the present when West sees Hilson talking with Ne-Yo while the right side of the screen relays the first part of the video in black and white. The final scene is a small confrontation between her two love interests and the video ends with Hilson's free-falling scene shown again. There are no specific dance routines featured in the video. However the video has been known for its sex appeal due to the fact that Hilson is laying down in bed wearing nothing more than her undergarments and a extremely thin see through undershirt.

During West's line "This is bad, real bad: Michael Jackson", Hilson is shown mouthing the lyrics and grabbing her crotch in a Jackson-esque manner.

It was premiered on Access Granted on March 23, 2009. Nick Tershay of Diamond Supply Co. makes a cameo in the video during Kanye West's verse. The music video for the song premiered on March 23, 2009, one day before the release of the album. The song was released as the second single in the United Kingdom on 22 June 2009.

The song is Hilson's most successful single as a lead vocalist peaking at number 3 on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 chart and number 5 on the UK Top 40, making it her 2nd top 10 single overall, after "The Way I Are", with her associate D.O.E. and musical mentor Timbaland both in the US and UK. "Poker Face" is an electropop song by American dance-pop singer-songwriter Lady Gaga from her debut album, The Fame. The music video for "Poker Face" was directed by Ray Kay and was aided by Anthony Mandler. Premiering on October 22, 2008, The video is set by a pool, as well as in a mansion. The video begins with Lady Gaga emerging out of the pool wearing a shiny masquerade mask and a black full body leotard, with two Great Danes beside her. She throws the mask aside and the song begins with a facial shot of Gaga singing it. Gaga wears a metallic sticker on her left cheek in this shot. Featured in the video are scenes of Gaga in a mansion and dancing poolside with her dancers in a turquoise leotard. Gaga attends a wild party where every man and woman tries their luck on a stripped poker game. The music video was shot in late November and was directed by Philip Andelman. It features actor Michael Ealy as Knowles' love interest , and unlike the other three music videos from the album , "Halo" is the first video to be shot fully in colour. The song was cut to be shorter for the music video (the album version is 4 minutes and 21 seconds, while the video version is around 3 minutes and 45 seconds. Aliaune Thiam (born April 16, 1977), better known by his stage name Akon (pronounced /ˈeɪkɒn/), is a Wolof Senegalese-American hip hop singer-songwriter,rapper, and record producer. Akon rose to prominence in 2004 following the release of his single "Locked Up" from his debut album Trouble. His second album, Konvicted, earned him a Grammy Award nomination for the single "Smack That." He is the founder of two record labels, Konvict Muzik and Kon Live Distribution. He is well known for singing hooks and has over 155 guest appearances and 23 Billboard Hot 100 songs to his credit. He is the first solo artist to ever accomplish the feat of holding both the number one and two spots simultaneously on the Billboard Hot 100 charts twice.

Akon's solo debut album, Trouble was released on June 29, 2004. It spawned the hit singles "Locked Up" and "Lonely", as well as "Belly Dancer (Bananza)", "Pot Of Gold", and "Ghetto." Akon allegedly served a three-year jail sentence for grand theft auto, an experience that supposedly inspired his "Locked Up." "Locked Up" reached the top 10 in the U.S. and the top five in the UK. His manager Robert Montanez was shot to death following a dispute in New Jersey in December 2005. "Ghetto" became a radio hit when it was remixed by Green Lantern to include verses from legendary rappers 2Pac and The Notorious B.I.G. In 2005, he released the single "Lonely" (which samples Bobby Vinton's "Mr. Lonely"). The song reached the top five on the Billboard Hot 100, and topped the charts in Australia, the UK and Germany. His album also climbed to number one in the UK in April, 2005. When music channel The Box had a top ten weekly chart, which was calculated by the amount of video requests, Akon's "Lonely" became the longest running single on the top of the chart, spanning over fifteen weeks. Akon then released another single featuring with a New Zealand rapper, Savage with the single Moonshine, which had become a success in both New Zealand and Australia, becoming number one in the New Zealand charts. In 2005, Akon gained more popularity after being featured on Young Jeezy's debut album, Let's Get It: Thug Motivation 101, on the song "Soul Survivor."

Akon's second album, entitled Konvicted, was released on November 14, 2006. Konvicted included collaborations with Eminem, Snoop Dogg and Styles P. Late August 2006, Akon released the single "Smack That" featuring Eminem, from the album. This single peaked at number two on the Billboard Hot 100 for five consecutive weeks. The music video for "Smack That" was directed by Raymond Garced. "I Wanna Love You," the second single off Konvicted, was released in September 2006. It is a collaboration between Akon and Snoop Dogg. This single earned Akon his first number-one single on the Billboard Hot 100, and Snoop's second. "I Wanna Love You" topped the U.S. charts for two consecutive weeks. In January 2007, Akon released his third single "Don't Matter" which earned him his first solo number one and second consecutive Hot 100 chart topper. "Mama Africa" was released as a European single in July 2007, making it the fourth single. It debuted in the UK at number 47. "Sorry, Blame It on Me" is the album's fifth single which debuted in August 2007, on the Hot 100 at number seven, which also happened to be a career best. The song is not available on the original album, but instead part of the Deluxe Edition of Konvicted, which came out August 28, 2007. The sixth and final single was confirmed in an interview by Akon to be "Never Took the Time." Konvicted debuted at number two on the Billboard 200, selling 286,000 copies in its first week. After only six weeks, Konvicted sold more than one million records in the U.S. and more than 1.3 million worldwide. The album was certified platinum after seven weeks, and after sixteen weeks it was certified double platinum. Konvicted was able to stay in the top twenty of the Billboard 200 for 28 consecutive weeks, where it peaked at number two on four different occasions. On November 20, 2007, the RIAA has certified the Konvicted album triple platinum status with 3 million units sold in th United States. Currently it has sold more than 4 million worldwide.

On October 5, 2006, Akon broke a record on the Hot 100, as he achieved the largest climb in the chart's 48-year-history with "Smack That" jumping from number 95 to 7. The leap is fueled by its number six debut on Hot Digital Songs with 67,000 downloads. The record was broken on April 7, 2007 by Beyoncé and Shakira's "Beautiful Liar" when it jumped from 94 to 3 on the Hot 100, because of their 150,000 digital downloads on the Hot Digital Songs.

In December 2006, Akon's "Smack That" was nominated for Best Rap/Sung Collaboration at the 49th Annual Grammy Awards, but lost to Justin Timberlake and T.I.'s "My Love".

Akon co-produced Konvict Muzik artist Lady Gaga's first studio album The Fame and co-wrote & produced the worlwide smash-hit Just Dance which also featured Colby O'Donis, the track earned a Grammy nomination at the 51st Grammy Awards, which earned the both young Konvict Muzik artists there first Grammy Nominations and has reached #1 in more than 14 countries, including Australia, UK & the U.S.

Akon is the executive producer of Not 4 Sale, Kardinal Offishall's fourth solo album, which was released on September 9, 2008. The street track "Graveyard Shift" features Akon rapping, and Akon also appears on the first official single Dangerous, which peaked at #5 on The Billboard Hot 100 and is nominated for Single of The Year and the Juno Awards.

Akon released his new album Freedom on December 2, which spawned three singles: "Right Now (Na Na Na)", "I'm So Paid" (featuring Lil Wayne and Young Jeezy) and "Beautiful" (featuring Kardinal Offishall and Colby O'Donis). The album has reached gold status by selling over 500,000 albums.

Akon is also confirmed to feature in Flo Rida's upcoming album with the song "Available" which also features Will.i.am.

Rap singer Nelly confirmed that Akon, Pharrell and T-Pain have talked about forming a rap supergroup in 2009.

Rahman and Ron Fair, Scherzinger prefers to consider this version an interpretation of the original song rather than a remix. The music video, shot in a Vienna trainyard, alludes to the dance sequence in the film.

The song was released on February 23, 2009 on the U.S. iTunes Store and released internationally on February 24. The song debuted on both the Billboard Hot 100 and Canadian Hot 100 at number 100. Yusuke Kamiji (上地雄輔 ,Kamiji Yūsuke?, born April 18, 1979 in Yokosuka, Kanagawa) is a Japanese actor. Kamiji graduated from Yokohama Senior High School. He belonged to the famously strict baseball club while in school, and played catcher. He and Daisuke Matsuzaka played together for one year, and when Matsuzaka joined the club, it was Kamiji who first practiced with him. Kamiji assumed uniform number 2 from autumn of his junior year, but handed it over to freshman Yoshio Koyama (currently with the Chunichi Dragons) because of a serious injury to his right elbow during practice.

After high school, Kamiji attempted to enter university on a sports scholarship, but gave it up after the injury to his elbow. He then decided to make his way as an actor. He made his debut in the serial drama "LXIXVXE" on TBS in 1999. By this time, Daisuke Matsuzaka had made world headlines in the pros, and it was reported in several Japanese sports journals that his "former wife" had debuted as an actor. Kamiji acquired experience be appearing in bit parts in many TV dramas and movies.

His big break was in a guest appearance on "Quiz Hexagon II", a Japanese celebrity game show, in which he continues to provide comic relief and comical answers to routine questions; he is also a regular guest on Fuji TV's Stupid Cara. With two of his fellow regulars on Quiz! Hexagon II, Takeshi Tsuruno and Naoki Nokubo, Kamiji has also formed a musical unit called "Shuchishin (羞恥心)". The trio often perform on air on Hexagon II. Kamiji's father, Katsuaki Kamiji, is Yokosuka City Congressman.

In April 2008, Ayumi Hamasaki commemorate her tenth anniversary in Avex, she released the single "Mirrorcle World"; it topped the Oricon, making Hamasaki the only female solo artist to have a number-one single every year for ten consecutive years. Hamasaki also held her second tour of Asia, Asia Tour 2008: 10th Anniversary, to celebrate her tenth anniversary. From April until June, she toured Japan, holding seventeen concerts. Taiwan, Hong Kong, and Shanghai were again the foreign stops after the domestic performances. On September 10, 2008, Hamasaki released A Complete: All Singles, a compilation album that includes the A-sides of all her singles along with previously unreleased footage from her A-nation concerts.

Dragonball Evolution Summary:

Dragonball begins as a tongue-and-cheek outting for kids as Goku and his Grandpa battle atop two ropes. We are introduced to the concept of "key", which rhymes with chi, and it apparently allows one to focus unseen energy into attacks. Shadow crane strike!

From here we see Goku's high school and meet the girl of his dreams. She of course has a muscle bound boy toy that hates Goku. Various high school antics abound until Goku is given a dragonball by his Grandpa.

After Piccolo, an unexplained ultimate evil that has been imprisoned for 2000 years at the Earth's core, begins to gather the dragonballs in hopes of destroying the world it is only a matter of time before Goku, dream girl, a tech-savy and gun yielding girl with a blue hair stripe, a "key" master, and a bizarre man who traps everyone in a large hole join forces to battle him. They battle jelly-like creatures that split into more copies of themselves when killed, hurry to watch dream girl battle in a kung-fu tournament, blue stripe and strange older dude fall in love, and Goku learns he is actually an alien hybrid that is half him and half space monkey. He struggles to control his space monkey side, because evidently nobody can defeat it. Thus Goku spouts off things like "I will be true to myself!" and "Two are one!"

At Lilly's birthday party, Miley is forced to attend as her alter-ego Hannah Montana, and performs the song "Let's Get Crazy", accompanied by Steve Rushton on the guitar. This goes badly because people direct their attention at Hannah instead of Lilly.

In her hometown, Miley develops a deep connection with Travis Brody (Lucas Till), a childhood friend. Robby also has a love interest, Lorelei played by Melora Hardin. But troubles arise when Oswald, a local citizen of the town who knows about her secret identity, plans on exposing her for his own means. Miley then realizes that she loves her life in Tennessee as much as she likes being Hannah Montana and questions whether she really will choose one life over the other.

"Jai Ho" is a Hindi song composed by A. R. Rahman, written by Gulzar, and performed by Sukhwinder Singh and Rahman, for the end credits of the film Slumdog Millionaire (2008), where it accompanies a choreographed dance sequence. The song also features vocals by Tanvi Shah, Mahalakshmi Iyer and Vijay Prakash.

"Jai Ho" was originally composed for the 2008 film Yuvvraaj, but was turned down by director Subhash Ghai who thought the song was not suitable for actor Zayed Khan to perform onscreen. After his Oscar win, A. R. Rahman revealed in an interview that it was Ghai who had asked him to use words Jai Ho in a song. After its inclusion in Slumdog Millionaire, it was later nominated for best song at the 2008 Broadcast Film Critics Association Awards, the 2008 Satellite Awards and at the 2008 Houston Film Critics Society Awards. In 2009, it won the Academy Award for Best Original Song, beating out WALL-E's "Down to Earth" by Peter Gabriel, and "O... Saya", also of Slumdog Millionaire and by A. R. Rahman.

In translation, the title means "Victory". It can also mean "Praise", "Hail" or "Hallelujah". When translated directly into hindi, "jai" means "prayer" or "pray." "Jai ho" is usually said collectively during and at the end of prayers. The lyrics are mostly in Hindi, interspersed with some Spanish lyrics. Rahman, who performed "Jai Ho" live on The Oprah Winfrey Show on February 23, 2009 with the rest of the original performers, was asked by Winfrey what the song title means. A.R. Rahman then stated "Jai Ho" means "May Victory be Yours".

In March 2009, Super Cassettes Industries (T-Series), the music company which holds the song's copyright, received nearly $200,000 from the governing Indian National Congress party for its use in its national campaign in the upcoming 2009 Indian General Elections. This version will feature altered lyrics sung by Sukhwinder Singh, who performed on the original song. A new video has also already been shot for this version, and it is slated to hit the airwaves soon.

The song became Rihanna's first number-one on the Billboard Hot 100 chart; it also debuted at number one on the Hot Digital Songs chart. The second single, entitled "Unfaithful", was written by R&B singer Ne-Yo and became her third top ten hit in the U.S. and in the UK. Rihanna went into the studio in early 2007 with Ne-Yo, Stargate, and Timbaland among others to record her third album, Good Girl Gone Bad. The album was released on June 5, 2007, features Jay-Z and Ne-Yo. Rihanna worked with Timbaland on three songs in the album. Justin Timberlake co-wrote and provides background vocals on "Rehab".

The album so far has yielded five hit singles, including the world-wide number one hit "Umbrella", featuring Jay-Z. Her other singles, " Shut Up and Drive" and "Don't Stop The Music" were able to mirror the success of "Umbrella", with "Don't Stop The Music" reaching number three on the Billboard Hot 100, becoming Rihanna's seventh top ten single and her fourth top five hit, while peaking at number one in various countries, including the United World Chart. The fourth single "Hate That I Love You", featuring Ne-Yo, was able to peak at number seven in the U.S.

Rihanna says she is inspired by such artists like Alicia Keys, Beyonce Knowles and Mariah Carey. She also states that on her album, you'll not only listen to reggae, but you'll hear ballads and other R&B fused tracks.

Sweetness rules on Colbie Caillat's debut, Coco, which is perhaps only appropriate for an album bearing that name, but the record doesn't play like a toasty mug of chocolate on a winter's day, it's a sugary lemonade on a breezy summer afternoon. It's light and comforting, a familiar blend of sunny pop and singer/songwriter tropes that flirt with cliché but never sound hackneyed -- a lighter, brighter spin on Norah Jones that sounds like an ideal soundtrack to a few hours in a cozy coffeehouse or a montage on Grey's Anatomy, whatever comes first.

If that gives the impression that Caillat is a little calculated -- and if her music-biz heritage (her dad co-produced Fleetwood Mac's Rumours and Tusk) gives the sense that she may have had a silver spoon, and if her celebrated MySpace popularity is also initially suspect -- then as an album Coco shows no crassness or coldness: it flows easily and, yes, sweetly, filled with gently ingratiating melodies and delivered with warmth and a casual charisma that proves to be quite endearing by the end of the record.

Caillat doesn't attempt anything approaching a major statement -- the album is filled with songs about love and life -- but that's her appeal: she sings about simple, everyday things in an unassuming manner, letting her melodies and girl-next-door charm carry the day, and they do so winningly on this nicely mellow debut.

Colbie Caillat

A great song, says Colbie Caillat, should lift your heart, warm the soul and make you feel good. Taking her own sound advice, "Coco", the debut album by the 22 year-old Californian singer-songwriter is simply crammed full of them.

In an age when marketing has been elevated above content and so many songs are written and produced to a pre-ordained formula, Caillat comes as a welcome breath of fresh air. Records these days seem to fall into two categories. The vast majority tend to contain one or two good tracks which you download to your computer so that you never have to listen to the rest of the album again. Far more rare are those that demand to be listened to from start to finish, with every song in perfect symmetry. Think of the kind of vintage, organically-crafted albums that Carole King or Joni Mitchell used to make. Thankfully, it's a tradition that is being kept alive today by the likes of Norah Jones, Jack Johnson - and now Colbie Caillat.

"If you listen to an album like Fleetwood Mac's Rumours, every song has its place," she says. "If you took one away you'd spoil the balance of the entire record. That's the kind of album I wanted to make. It wouldn’t feel right to have my name on a record that was just a few good tracks and then lots of filler."

The reference to Fleetwood Mac is revealing. Caillat grew up in the idyllic clime of Malibu, California with music all around her. Her father, Ken Caillat, co-produced Fleetwood Mac's "Rumours" and "Tusk" albums and later ran his own record label. As a child she recalls the likes of Mick Fleetwood and John McVie being around. "Of course I've learned a lot from them. You'd be a fool not to," she says. Yet she is totally her own woman.

She began singing with serious intent at the age of 11 after hearing Lauryn Hill's version of Killing Me Softly. "I think her voice is absolutely beautiful and it made me want to start singing so I entered a talent show and of course I sang a Lauryn Hill song." As she grew older, however, her father offered one crucial piece of advice. It was all very well having a great voice, he pointed out, the people who command real respect in the music business are the songwriters. "I thought about that for a long time", she says.

In truth, it took some time coming - but when it did, the floodgates opened. "I needed to play an instrument to write songs and although I had piano lessons as a kid, it never went anywhere because I was never in the right state of mind to practice," she recalls. Surprisingly, it wasn't until she was 19 - little more than two years ago -that she eventually took up the acoustic guitar. "I wrote my fist song after my very first guitar lesson and then it just all flowed out," she recalls. "If something's biting me I hold it in because that's the kind of person I am. Then it comes out in songs. Things builds up inside of me and I'll write three songs in a weekend. It's a release. I don't choose what to write about. It's just there."

"All I Ever Wanted" By Kelly Clarkson

By the standard of her second album, Kelly Clarkson's third effort was a commercial disappointment: "My December" has sold only a fraction of the copies that "Breakaway" did.

The fraction happens to be about one-fifth, which sounds bad until you consider that "Breakaway" was a once-in-a-career effort, and that "My December" has still shifted 2.5 million units worldwide -- an unqualified success by any other standard, especially in an era where million-sellers are increasingly rare.

Even so, the shameful controversy surrounding Clarkson's decision to co-write all the songs on "My December" -- epitomized by label head Clive Davis offering Clarkson $10 million to swap five of her songs for five of his choosing -- has certainly colored the way she approached her fourth album, "All I Ever Wanted" (RCA).

It is in many ways a safer, if catchier outing, with chart-centric writing contributions from some of the hottest hired-gun songsmiths around, including Max Martin, Ryan Tedder and Kara DioGuardi. In fact, there are 11 different writing credits on these 14 songs, which results in the usual problem that accompanies such variety: there's no unified style.

Clarkson's powerful voice is the one constant, and she's a versatile singer who is equally adept at nuance and full-on bombast. She displays both here, but not enough of these songs play to her strengths. There's too much techno flavoring for a singer who's at her best on songs with a rock edge, like her 2004 smash hit "Since U Been Gone."

The pulsing beats and blaring synths of "If I Can't Have You" and lead single "My Life Would Suck Without You" are fine for less gifted singers who need the distraction, but they're overkill for Clarkson. She shines brightest here on the ballads.

Clarkson sings with empathy over piano and cascading guitar on "Save You" and pours on the heartache with layered vocals on "Already Gone," piano and strings rolling mournfully over a steady, boxy drumbeat. There's a throwback '70s-pop feel to the bouncy organ on "Ready," and echoes of classic girl groups in the playful stutter-step rhythm of "I Want You," which Clarkson sings with demure allure.

They're standouts on an album that's about halfway there: The good songs are great, but the empty bluster on some of the others overshadows the spunky personality that made Clarkson a draw in the first place.

The winner of Fox TV's first American Idol competition during the summer of 2002, Kelly Clarkson went from an anonymous talent to a nationally known singer in a matter of months, performing for an audience of millions. One of the show's most naturally gifted singers, the affable Texan then went on to enjoy a successful pop career, with only Carrie Underwood rivaling her as American Idol's most commercial export.

Clarkson was born in Forth Worth and raised in Burleson, TX, and her vocal talents were discovered in seventh grade, when a music teacher heard her voice and urged Clarkson to join the school choir. After high school, she opted to skip college and went to Hollywood to make her name; she appeared as an extra on an episode of Sabrina, the Teenage Witch, but no other opportunities materialized. Upon returning to Burleson, Clarkson worked at a movie theater, promoted Red Bull energy drinks, and ultimately worked as a cocktail waitress at a comedy club before entering the American Idol contest.

One of 10,000 aspiring singers, Clarkson distinguished herself not only with her big, surprisingly mature voice, but also with her down-to-earth charm and sense of humor; at one of her auditions, she switched places with judge Randy Jackson, who did an impromptu version of R. Kelly's "I Believe I Can Fly." Over the course of the 13-week show, her consistently strong performances of songs like "Respect," "Natural Woman," "Stuff Like That There," and "Without You" earned Clarkson enough audience votes to claim one of the contest's two finalist positions. After singing "A Moment Like This" and "Before Your Love," both of which were written for the show, Clarkson won the American Idol contest with 58 percent of the audience's votes. In addition to the show's prize of one million dollars and a recording contract with RCA, Clarkson secured a deal with Creative Artists Agency and several bookings, including the national American Idol tour and a performance of the national anthem at the September 11 commemoration at Washington, D.C.'s Lincoln Memorial.

Despite her newfound fame, Clarkson opted to remain in Texas rather than move to New York or Los Angeles. Her first single, "A Moment Like This," was released just two weeks after she won the contest and quickly earned platinum sales. Clarkson's debut full-length, Thankful, was released in spring of 2003, just in time to coincide with the second season of American Idol (and right before the American Idol movie, From Justin to Kelly). Breakaway followed in late 2004 and was a huge success, selling over five million copies (making it the third best-selling album of 2005) and spawning the hit singles "Because of You," "Behind These Hazel Eyes," and the enormously popular "Since U Been Gone." That song and Breakaway earned Grammys for Best Female Pop Vocal Performance and Best Pop Vocal Album, respectively, at the 48th Annual Grammy Awards in early 2006. Clarkson continued her busy touring schedule into the summer and announced plans for her third album.

Clarkson released My December, the studio follow-up to Breakaway, in 2007. Notable as Clarkson's first foray into songwriting, My December featured a darker, more rock-oriented edge than its predecessor and even featured a guest appearance by punk icon bassist Mike Watt. However, label exec Clive Davis openly disapproved of the album's direction, claiming that it lacked the commercial appeal of Breakaway. A public feud ensued, and Clarkson was dealt another blow when poor ticket sales resulted in the cancellation of her upcoming tour. The leadoff single "Never Again" nevertheless became a Top Ten pop hit, and My December climbed its way to platinum status by the year's end.

Kelly Clarkson returned to the top of the charts in early 2009, when the sugary single "My Life Would Suck Without You" set a record for the largest leap to number one.
